If you are supporting someone.
Being the person someone reaches for is heavy and important. Four things that help:
- Take it seriously, even if you are not sure. Asking directly about suicide does not plant the idea; research shows being asked often brings relief.
- Stay with them, or stay on the line with them, while you reach one of the numbers above together.
- Remove anything that could cause harm, if you can do so safely.
- Afterwards, keep showing up. Check in again tomorrow, and the day after that.
