Many People put off booking a first Session because they do not know what the hour will hold. Here is what happens, step by step, and how to tell if a Therapist fits you.

Before you arrive

A first Session is a conversation, not an exam. You do not need to prepare a speech, know your diagnosis, or have your story in order. Most People arrive unsure, and Therapists expect that.

One thing does help: notice what made you book. A sentence as simple as "I have not felt like myself since March" gives your Therapist a place to begin, and you do not need more than that.

What the first hour looks like

  • The ground rules. Your Therapist explains Confidentiality first: what stays private, and the rare safety situations where it cannot. You can ask about this as directly as you like.
  • Your story, at your pace. Expect open questions about what brought you in, your sleep, your relationships, your work. You decide how deep to go on day one. "I am not ready to talk about that yet" is a complete answer.
  • A direction, not a verdict. Good first Sessions end with a shape: what you might work on together, how often you would meet, and what approach the Therapist would take. Nobody should hand you a life diagnosis in fifty minutes.

Why fit matters more than technique

Decades of research agree on something People instinctively feel: the relationship between you and your Therapist, what researchers call the therapeutic alliance, is one of the strongest predictors of whether Therapy works. A 2018 meta-analysis by Flückiger and colleagues, spanning nearly 300 studies, confirmed the link holds across countries, conditions and types of Therapy.

So after the first Session, ask yourself two questions. Did I feel heard rather than processed? Could I imagine telling this Person something difficult? If the answer is no both times, take that seriously: switching Therapists early is common, sensible, and something good Practitioners themselves encourage.

The practical part

Ask about cost before the first Session, not after: the fee, whether a sliding scale exists, and whether your Insurance or employer Benefit covers it. On Heyrafiki, every price is visible before you book, and every Practitioner is licence-verified against the Official Records.
