Say something, even imperfectly
The most common reason People stay silent when a friend is struggling is fear of saying the wrong thing. But the message that started this company was not clinically worded. It said "Hey Rafiki", and it arrived when it was needed. You do not need better words than that.
Start specific and honest: "You have not seemed yourself lately, and I have been thinking about you." A specific observation shows the Person you have been paying attention, which is most of what they need to hear.
Listen to understand, not to fix
- Let silence sit. People often reach the true thing on the second or third attempt. Rushing to fill the pause cuts them off one sentence early.
- Skip the silver linings. "At least you have a job" and "others have it worse" are meant as comfort and land as dismissal. Try "that sounds really heavy" instead.
- Ask what they need. "Do you want ideas, or do you want company?" is one of the most useful questions in any language.
The question you are afraid to ask
If you are worried someone may be thinking about ending their life, ask directly: "Are you having thoughts of hurting yourself?" Many People fear the question plants the idea. The research says the opposite. A 2014 review by Dazzi and colleagues in Psychological Medicine found that asking about suicide does not increase suicidal thoughts, and for People who are struggling, being asked often brings relief: it means someone is willing to hear the answer.
If the answer is yes, or you are unsure: stay with them, take it seriously, and connect them with Real help. The Crisis Centre lists verified Kenyan crisis lines that answer around the clock.
Help with the next step, not just the idea
"You should see someone" rarely moves anyone on its own. What moves People is specifics: "I found three Therapists who fit what you told me. Want to look together?" Most People get lost in the stretch between knowing Care exists and booking it. Walking that stretch together, checking a Practitioner's licence, comparing prices, takes minutes on Heyrafiki and makes the step far less daunting.
Look after yourself too
Supporting a Person you love through a hard season is Real work, and it draws on the same reserves everything else does. Check in with yourself as honestly as you check in with them, and take a break before you need one.
