What it is about
The book is built around a single change of question. When someone struggles, we tend to ask, even silently, what is wrong with you? Child psychiatrist Dr Bruce Perry and Oprah Winfrey, who tells her own story throughout, argue for a different question: what happened to you?
Written as a conversation between the two, the book walks through how the developing brain organizes itself around early experience. Stress that arrives in unpredictable, uncontrollable ways literally shapes the systems a child will use to handle every stress that follows. What looks like overreaction, shutdown or self-sabotage in an adult is often a nervous system doing exactly what it learned to do to survive.
The hopeful part is the second half of the science: brains organized by experience can be reorganized by experience. Predictable, patient relationships, rhythm, and moments of safety, repeated over time, do the rewiring, at any age.
